A 30 × 20 ft lawn
600 ft²exact lawn area
+10%example allowance
→660 ft²planned coverage
At an example 10 ft² per roll, an individual order needs 66 rolls, covering 660 ft². An illustrative $6 per roll gives $396 in material cost. If the same product has 50 rolls per pallet, each pallet covers 500 ft²: a full-pallet order needs 2 pallets, or 100 rolls, covering 1,000 ft². That leaves 340 ft² beyond the allowance. At an illustrative $250 per pallet, material cost is $500. Choose one order; do not buy 66 rolls plus 2 pallets.
The coverage, pallet count, allowance and prices are examples, not a universal sod specification or current quote. Two small areas needing 2 ft² and 3 ft² combine to 5 ft²: one 10 ft² roll at 0% allowance, rather than one roll for each area.
Frequently asked questions
A second look at the estimate.
How many pieces or rolls of sod do I need?
Add the lawn areas, apply one chosen allowance, divide by the coverage of one piece or roll, and round up once for the total order. Enter the coverage of the actual product you will buy.
How many square feet are on a pallet of sod?
There is no universal pallet coverage. In this tool it equals the area covered by one piece or roll multiplied by the supplier's whole-unit count per pallet. If the supplier only quotes a nominal pallet area, ask for the exact unit specification before using full-pallet mode.
Should I add the rolls and pallets together?
No. The minimum individual-unit quantity is an alternative to the selected full-pallet order. Full pallets can include more units than the minimum, which is why purchased coverage and surplus are shown separately.
Can I estimate sod in square meters?
Yes. Metric mode uses meters for lengths and square meters for product coverage. Changing units converts both measurements and coverage while preserving counts and quoted per-unit prices.
What allowance should I use?
Choose it for the layout and supplier guidance. Curves, narrow strips and unusable offcuts can affect cuts. The calculator starts at 0% and does not prescribe a universal rate; the worked example's 10% is illustrative.
Does sod cost include installation or delivery?
No. It uses whole units in the selected buying method and the unit price you enter. Delivery, tax, pallet deposits, site preparation and labor are excluded. It does not automatically apply supplier discounts or minimum order charges.
Sources and limitations
This is a surface-coverage and material-order estimate for one uniform sod product. It does not assess growing conditions, drainage, grass suitability, transport capacity or installation requirements. Confirm measurements, selling increments and product specifications with your supplier.
