From bed area to material volume
Apply the depth
Area multiplied by material depth gives the exact volume before planning allowance.
Choose packaging
Bag estimates use the volume printed on the package and round up to a whole bag. Bulk results stay in cubic yards or metres.
Add supplier data
Price and density are optional because product, moisture, particle size, and delivery rules vary by supplier.
Worked example
A 20 × 10 ft planting bed
200 ft²bed area
×3 inmulch depth
=55 ft³with 10% allowance
At 2 ft³ per bag, the estimate rounds up to 28 bags, or about 2.04 cubic yards for a bulk order.

Why is weight optional?
Moisture, particle size, and material composition change density, so the tool needs a product-specific value.
Does the estimate include compaction?
Only through the allowance you choose. Confirm the installed-depth requirements for the material.
Sources and limitations
This tool estimates material volume. It does not determine excavation, compaction, drainage design, vehicle payload, or a supplier’s minimum delivery. Weight appears only when you enter a density for the exact product.
