What “yield” means

Bag yield is the approximate volume of mixed concrete produced from one bag when it is prepared according to that product’s instructions. It is a volume—not a fixed square-foot coverage number.

Coverage changes with project thickness. Product formulation, water, mixing, placement, consolidation, and jobsite loss can also change practical output. That is why the product label or current data sheet takes priority over a general reference table.

A 10 × 6 ft slab, 4 inches thick

The existing Concrete calculation core gives this example an exact volume of 20 ft³ and 22 ft³ after a 10% planning allowance. Final purchasing rounds up to whole bags:

  • 50 lb: 58 bags at 0.38 ft³ each
  • 60 lb: 49 bags at 0.45 ft³ each
  • 80 lb: 37 bags at 0.60 ft³ each

The allowance is a planning choice, not a yield guarantee. Confirm whether a supplier recommends a different allowance for the actual pour and product.

Check the exact product label

  • Bag weight and product name: two mixes with the same weight can list different yields.
  • Yield per bag: use the printed ft³ or m³ value when it differs from this guide.
  • Mixing instructions: follow the manufacturer’s water and preparation directions.
  • Application limits: confirm the product is intended for the project type and placement depth.
  • Whole-bag purchase: calculate with the verified yield, then round the final package count up.
